Want to cut down the amount of time you wait in line at Disney World? Then you’ll want to understand how to use Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass at Disney World!

Disney introduced this new system for “line skipping” in July 2024. It replaces the Genie+ system (which had been a replacement for the Fastpass+ system). And I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping this one sticks because I’m a little tired of learning new systems every few years.

So let’s break it ALL down, from the basics of Lightning Lanes to strategy for each park.

What is Lightning Lane Multi Pass?

Lightning Lane Multi Pass is an add on to your ticket that allows you to access Lightning Lanes for certain rides (i.e. shorter wait lines).

A couple important things to know:

  • This is an additional purchase to your ticket.
  • Each person that wants to use Lightning Lanes must have purchased the Lightning Lane Multi Pass.
  • After purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you must reserve Lightning Lane times for each ride.
  • You can only book a Lightning Lane for each ride once per day.
  • You can book three Lightning Lanes in advance of your trip each day, and more once you start using the ones you have booked.

What is Lightning Lane Single Pass?

In addition to Lightning Lane Multi Pass, there are also Lightning Lane Single Passes. There is at least one ride in each park (sometimes two rides) that utilize Lightning Lane Single Passes. And these are an ADDITIONAL cost.

Here are some important things to know about Lightning Lane Single Passes:

  • Each person that wants to use a Lightning Lane Single Pass must buy and reserve it.
  • You can reserve up to two Lightning Lane Single Passes per day, but not for the same ride.
  • You can book Lightning Lane Single Passes in advance of your trip.
  • You do NOT have to purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass in order to use Lightning Lane Single Pass.

That last bullet point is something I especially want to point out, because in some cases it may make more sense for you to book a Lightning Lane Single Pass instead of a Multi Pass.

The best example of this is in Animal Kingdom. If you have a solid rope-drop strategy, you can get a lot of the major rides done with minimal wait in the morning and then use a Lightning Lane Single Pass for Flight of Passage. (My favorite Animal Kingdom rope drop strategy is Na’vi River Journey to Expedition Everest to Kilimanjaro Safaris.)

What Happened to Genie+?

Basically, Genie+ is gone. And all the strategy (like having to wake up to book each day at 7 a.m. and the two hour rule for booking new Lightning Lanes) is also gone.

I like to think of this new system of a mashup between Fastpass+ and Genie+. Although really it’s more like the old Fastpass+, except of course Disney kept all the paid elements of Genie+ that allowed them to make more money.

What Rides Are Included in Lightning Lane Multi Pass?

Before we get into the specific rides that are a part of the Lightning Lane Multi Pass system, there’s one SUPER important thing you need to know. Disney has implemented a Tier system in three of the four theme parks.

For Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios, there are two tiers of rides. And when you are booking your Lightning Lanes in advance, you can only book ONE ride from Tier One. (Animal Kingdom does not have Tiers.)

HOWEVER, once you are in the park and using your Lightning Lanes and booking more, the Tier system goes out the window and you can book rides from either tier, regardless of whether or not you still have a Tier One ride booked.

So…what rides are included in each park? Here’s the full list, and I’ve added an asterisks (*) next to the rides you will especially want to prioritize.

What Rides Have Lightning Lane Single Pass?

At least one ride in each park utilizes Lightning Lane Single Pass. This is a completely separate purchase if you want to access the Lightning Lanes for these rides. It is important to note that stand-by lines are also available for some of these, while Virtual Queues (not standby, but it’s still free) is available for others.

Magic Kingdom

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (standby line also available)
  • TRON Lightcycle/Run (Virtual Queue also available)

Epcot

  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (Virtual Queue also available)

Hollywood Studios

  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (standby line also available)

Animal Kingdom

  • Avatar Flight of Passage (standby line also available)

How Do Virtual Queues Work With Lightning Lanes?

Virtual Queues are yet another completely separate system. There is no impact to your Lightning Lanes when you also utilize Virtual Queues.

However, while you can book three Lightning Lanes in advance of your trip, you can only book Virtual Queues on the same day. The good news is that they are free though!

To book a Virtual Queue spot, you will want to be in your My Disney Experience app before 7:00 a.m. on the day you plan to visit the park. Click “Join Virtual Queue” from the home screen and select your ride. Keep refreshing just before 7, and as soon as the “Join” button shows up at 7:00, hit it to get in.

If you miss a chance to get in at 7:00, they open the Virtual Queues up again at 1:00 p.m.

Remember: When a ride offers a Virtual Queue, there is NO standby line option available!

When Can I Book Lightning Lanes For My Trip?

If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort, you can book Lightning Lanes for your entire trip 7 days prior to your check-in day for your entire trip (up to 14 days) beginning at 7:00 a.m. Eastern time.

If you are staying off-property, you can book Lightning Lanes for the length of your ticket 3 days in advance beginning at 7:00 a.m. Eastern time.

How Much Does Lightning Lane Multi Pass Cost?

Lightning Lane Multi Pass price varies by day based on crowds. On average, the cost is $25 per day per ticket. But it can be higher or lower.

Since this is a fairly new system, we’ll still have to wait and see how much the price will fluctuate. But when Genie+ was still in effect, prices could range from $20 to $37 per day per ticket.

How Much Do Lightning Lane Single Passes Cost?

Lightning Lane Single Pass price will also vary based on crowds and on the specific ride.

Here’s what you can expect based on historic data though:

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: $10-$12
  • TRON Lightcycle/Run: $20
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind: $14-$17
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: $20-$25
  • Avatar Flight of Passage: $14-$16

How Do I Book More Lightning Lanes During the Day?

Once you are in the park and start using your Lightning Lanes, you can book more!

Each time you scan into a Lightning Lane, it frees you up to book another. And it doesn’t matter what ride Tier that one is in!

This is why I definitely recommend having a list of rides you want to book *after* those first three so you are prepared. (Looking for recommendations? My Disney World Planning Sheets have pre-planned itineraries that include Lightning Lane strategy!)

I also highly recommend using Standby Skipper to book additional Lightning Lanes for you!

How Does Park Hopping Work with Lightning Lane Multi Pass?

You can still do Park Hopping with Multi Pass!

Choose your original park and book your three Lightning Lanes in advance.

Then, once you enter that park and begin using Lightning Lanes, you can book your additional Lightning Lanes for a different park.

You will need to make sure you have a park hopper ticket though!

Can I Modify My Lightning Lanes?

Yes! You can use the Modify option to change the times of your Lightning Lanes in advance of your trip or even once you are in the park. This can help you get better times or even better rides.

I’ve heard stories of people modifying their Tier Two Lightning Lanes once they enter the park to Tier One rides, allowing them to hold multiple Tier One Lightning Lanes at once. I wouldn’t depend on this strategy though.

What Lightning Lanes Should I Book First?

There are definitely good ways to use your Lightning Lanes and not-so-good ways. Like, please don’t use your Lightning Lanes to book a spot in the Pixar Short Film Festival or Muppet Vision 3D.

So, when booking Lightning Lanes in advance of your trip, here’s what is going to be most valuable. (For most parks I’m listing more than three, so prioritize based on your group’s preferences!)

Magic Kingdom Lightning Lane Priorities

  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
  • Peter Pan’s Flight
  • Jungle Cruise
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Haunted Mansion

Epcot Lightning Lane Priorities

  • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
  • Frozen Ever After
  • Spaceship Earth
  • Journey into Imagination with Figment
  • The Seas with Nemo and Friends

Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane Priorities

  • Slinky Dog Dash
  • Toy Story Mania
  • Tower of Terror
  • Minnie & Mickey’s Runaway Railway

Animal Kingdom Lightning Lane Priorities

  • Na’vi River Journey
  • Kali River Rapids
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris
  • DINOSAUR
  • Expedition Everest

What If I am an International Guest?

Unfortunately, using Lightning Lane Multi Pass may be a bit more tricky for international guests. In order to book your Lightning Lanes in advance, you must be physically in the United States or Canada.

Hopefully they will figure out a way to fix this for international guests soon, but for now that’s how the system is set up.
